RidgeTop Ranch is located in the beautiful rolling hills of western Iowa, near Neola, just northeast of Council Bluffs. The ranch is operated by the Kevin Gunderson and Alan Schulz families. Kevin has been producing commercial feeders for over 25 years and in 2004 a decision was made by the two families to start a purebred Angus and Gelbvieh herd. The decision was made out of a desire to work closer with the genetic selection of these leading breeds as well as combining the two to produce top genetics in Balancers. The two combined herds currently consist of 115 cows and breeding heifers and are continuing to grow.
To provide the base for these new herds, we set out to acquire breeding stock from what we felt were strong reputable programs. We feel we have accomplished this with stock from such herds as Koupal Angus, Elk Creek Gelbvieh, and Adkins Gelbvieh in South Dakota, NCR Angus and Hoover Angus in Iowa, and Bartos Angus in Nebraska. The genetic focus for our herds and AI sire selections are on low birth weight and calving ease, strong growth performance, carcass quality and grading, efficient feed use and easy fleshing. Our goal is not to chase the extreme end of EPD’s but rather to maintain and improve on solid well balanced breed leading traits and EPD’s. Our commitment as a seed stock producer is to produce functional, productive and fertile, efficient, low maintenance cattle that can reach top yield grade.
